2010 UPCOMING WEBINARS
NOTE: We are now in British Summer Time (Daylight Saving Time). Sessions will start at 2PM BST. Use the Time Zone Converter to check the start time in your country:

8th September - Adrian Underhill (Biography) -'The Sound Foundations Phonetic Chart. How to use it and have fun with it'
I will take you on a guided tour of the chart and its layout. I’ll show you how I introduce it and help learners to ‘discover’ the muscles that enable them to make new sounds. This is wonderful because suddenly they experience pronunciation as concrete and doable, and they feel confidence and a precise purpose right at the start. Then I’ll show you ways of using the chart for vocabulary learning and for connected speech, and I’ll suggest tips and hints for integrating it into everything that happens in the classroom, including correction and prompting. I believe that pronunciation is the Cinderella of language teaching, neglected but still waiting to surprise everyone with its beauty and elegance! And I think this approach is motivating, joyful, and successful. See if you agree....!
13th October - Sue Kay (Biography) - 'Authenticity in ELT. Practical ideas for developing students' language skills'
In this talk, I will talk about the process I go through when choosing and adapting authentic material for the classroom. I will describe a principled approach to editing authentic texts so that they are accessible and useful as language input, and demonstrate speaking tasks that encourage learners to talk about things that actually matter to them, rather than playing roles or exchanging invented information.
10th November - Dave Spencer (Biography) - 'Word perfect: the importance of recycling in vocabulary teaching'
In this talk we will investigate what it means to really 'know' a word, and what influence this has on how we recycle and practice vocabulary in the classroom. We will also look at how memory works and the consequences that this can have on the design of effective recycling activities. There will be ideas for practical classroom activities, the aim of which is to make vocabulary learning stimulating and enjoyable for Secondary students.
8th December - Steve Taylore-Knowles (Biography) - 'Teaching the art of life'
Teaching is often described as an art, but what kind of art is teaching? What does the metaphor say about how we view the process, ourselves as teachers and our learners? Is it a metaphor that we can usefully turn onto the content of our teaching?
Perhaps our students need more than ‘language skills’ in a narrow sense. If we are to equip them properly for their future, equip them for life, perhaps we need to also think in terms of teaching the art of life. This set of skills is highly prized by employers, but usually neglected by educators. Introducing effective, systematic development of these skills into our classroom is a major challenge. This session outlines some ways in which we might go about meeting that challenge.
