I have been involved in ELT in various ways since 1985 - almost 20 years already! I started teaching English in a private language school in Athens, Greece, when I was still a university student. I was studying Philosophy at the time, but ended up working as an EFL teacher full time, and went on to study for a Diploma in Literature, a Diploma in Translation and an RSA Diploma in TEFL. In 1990, I started working as a teacher-trainer in a teacher-training centre in Athens - I taught on a variety of courses, including what was then the RSA Diploma course, until in 1998 I decided to go freelance.
As a freelancer, I have run teacher-training seminars and courses, both pre-service and in-service, for some of the largest English language schools and school chains in Greece, and have also worked quite extensively in ESP, designing and teaching onsite courses for companies in various sectors. I have also worked as an oral examiner for the Cambridge ESOL Young Learners, KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE exams for a number of years.
Since 1996, I have also been writing teaching materials for Heinemann ELT and, subsequently, Macmillan. Initially, I wrote a number of supplementary books for Greek learners to accompany coursebook series such as Apple Pie, Smile and Shine. Then came the Teacher's Book and Test Book for Rising Star and in 1999 I was commissioned to write a three-level coursebook series for young learners, which Macmillan Hellas published under the title Action in 2003.
In August 2004, I was offered the job of Academic Director of Eurognosi S.A. I found it too challenging to refuse, as Eurognosi is the largest chain of language schools in Greece and Cyprus, offering courses for children and adults, for general and specific purposes, in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. My responsibilities include the educational management of the whole operation, the development of teaching materials and courses, the training of the directors of studies and teachers and the quality control of all language education services.
