I have been working in ELT since 1991 after a career in the UK education system as music specialist, class teacher and deputy head teacher. My first position abroad was in an International school in Spain, where I realised I needed to find out more about teaching children through their second language! I took a year off - todays 'gap year' - and completed a Certificate in TEFL. From there my career has bridged both EFL and International school ESL environments and, has involved developing and running teacher training and development courses in South America and Europe, examining for UCLES and IELTS, coordinating and managing young learners and YL courses, writing and editing materials for the overseas ELT market, co-editing the IATEFL YL special interest group's newsletter C&TS for four years, and teaching. I still love being in the classroom and this experience directly feeds into the enthusiasm and ideas I have for the training courses and materials writing I am involved with, and vice versa. I completed an MA in TEYL in 2004 and have since continued to conduct small scale action research in the ESL classroom. I am currently based in the UK, working freelance as a teacher, teacher trainer, ELT author and editor.
In my free time, I enjoy giving talks for Plan UK, being a Room Guide in a local National Trust property, and taking my dog on lovely walks in the surrounding countryside.
