Education

Proud to be a child of the 1960s (I was born in late September, 1969), I spent a large part of my childhood at Mount House School Tavistock, Devon and King's College, Taunton, Somerset, where I was dreadful at sport and fell in love with theatre. Despite the typical (and not-so-typical) extra-curricular activities of student life at the University of Warwick, I managed to find time to get a BA (Hons.) in English and American Literature.

I made a number of career moves before ending up in ELT, including working on a Christmas tree farm, in an amusement arcade, stand-up comedy, busking, market research, telesales and running a magazine for the Asian community in Coventry. Some of the above I did with fellow author Steve Taylore-Knowles, who I met at university.

My ELT career started when, in 1993, I did a one-month intensive Trinity College, London Certificate in TESOL course at Coventry Technical College. Trinity College doesn't actually award grades, but Coventry Technical College does. My Grade A showed me that I was probably doing something right, so I decided to call myself a teacher.

Writing

Soon after I started teaching, I realized that the published materials I was using in the classroom were often far from ideal. I thought I could do better. Finding myself in the right place at the right time in 1995, I decided to call myself an EFL materials writer as well as a teacher. Here's a rather-dull-for-anyone-but-me list of the ELT books (not including teacher's books) which I've authored or co-authored:

I'm currently working with Steve Taylore-Knowles on two new coursebooks for Macmillan, to be published in January 2006.

Never content just to hand in a manuscript and then sit back and wait for the book to come out, I've also managed to involve myself in almost all aspects of the ELT publishing process, including market research; commissioning; project management; series editing; content editing; copy editing; proofreading; organizing, producing and acting in studio recordings; ELT song production; marketing.

I've also written a few articles, most of which were first published in the TESOL Greece newsletter. These include Simple Future which questions how ELT coursebooks and teachers should approach the presentation and teaching of future time.

Professional activities and interests

My first teaching position was in a language school in Coventry for the summer of 1993. I then moved to Greece, where I spent three years teaching in a language school in Alexandroupolis, near the Greek-Turkish border, before moving to Athens in 1996.

Although my writing career began in 1995, I remained a full-time EFL teacher until the middle of 2000. Due to time constraints, most of my time spent in the classroom these days is as an observer rather than as a teacher.

Since 1997, I've been a member of the production team for the PALSO English language examinations in Greece. I have overall responsibility for the beginner's exam, and work closely with Karen Lee to produce the elementary and basic exams.

I've given a large number of presentations, both professional and commercial, in Greece and Cyprus and was proud to be a plenary speaker at the TESOL Macedonia Thrace Annual Convention in Thessaloniki in 2003. I was also proud and thrilled to represent TESOL Greeceat the TESOL, Inc. Annual Convention in Baltimore, USA, in 2003.

I was elected onto the Board of TESOL Greece in March 2002, elected Chairperson in March 2003, and re-elected Chairperson for my final year on the Board in March 2004.

My professional interests include: grammar and lexico-grammar; the interface between ELT publishing and teaching practice; testing; the effects of corpora on teaching and materials production.

Non-professional interests

I do have a few non-ELT interests too. These include: music, politics, film, literature, political biography, backgammon (or 'tavli' as it's called in Greece). I've also written a screenplay, an adaptation of G. K. Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday, which sadly no agent seems interested in. Two things I'd like to do but probably never will (although you never know!): stand for parliament in the UK elections and write a hit West End musical.
