Mediation in the CEFR: implications for learning, teaching and assessment

‘Mediation’ is the latest ELT buzzword. But what exactly is it, and why should you teach it? In this webinar, Thom Kiddle explores the concept of mediation and the illustrative scales devoted to it in the 2018 Companion Volume to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). He looks at how mediation skills are used both inside and outside the classroom, with a particular focus on the mediation skills that teachers use in their everyday practice. He considers how mediation competences can benefit students in professional and academic life, and how coursebooks help learners develop this. He also looks at how mediation scales can be used for selfassessment and goal-setting, and to support teacher-led assessment.
