Session 1: Skillful teaching for enhanced student engagement in study skills

Stella will consider the importance of continuing study skills development throughout the student journey. She will explore inter-related steps teachers can take to make study skills more effective, especially through harnessing peer power to boost motivation, reflection and engagement.

About the Speakers

Dr Stella Cottrell is a million-copy selling author whose titles include The Study Skills Handbook, Critical Thinking, and the 50 Ways series. Formerly, she was Director for Lifelong Learning at the Universities of Bedfordshire and Leeds, and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of East London. She is currently a leadership coach for senior staff in education.

Although Zarina Subhan originally qualified as a scientist, she has been working in the field
of ELT for over 30 years. She has taught at all levels, in both private and government
institutions and worked worldwide as a teacher and teacher educator. Having worked both in and with educational institutions, she also has experience working with educational policy makers, NGOs, community leaders, local and state governments and in a variety of training contexts.
Zarina’s time is spent now between delivering training, conference presentations, and
writing materials. Having worked in the science, educational and development sectors, her
interests are the neurology of learning; CLIL; continuing professional development for
teachers; inclusive and sustainable education.
