Educating Adults Day

"The most valuable skill of the 21st century is not memorisation, but adaptability" - Heather E. McGowan

Teaching adults means adapting to diverse needs, tight frameworks, and fast-changing expectations. In this three-part event, we explore how to stay flexible and focused in that reality.

From reworking a syllabus to suit your own teaching context, to applying the latest research on how adults learn best, to supplementing a coursebook without overwhelming your lessons — each session offers practical strategies that speak to the same challenge: making informed, intentional choices in the adult English language classroom.

The event will take place live 3 times on Wednesday 10th December
at 10am, 3pm, and 9:30pm UK Time.

From Intricate to Adaptable: Reimagine the modern coursebook

Modern coursebook syllabi have evolved into tightly woven, intricate documents. With today’s access to information it’s easy to bring in your own material to supplement a course, especially in university courses. But it's harder to incorporate it and not feel you are losing something. This talk looks at how we got the modern multi-strand syllabus and what a more open framework could look like.

    10:00am; 3:00pm; 9:30pm (UK time)

    Session 2

How our memory works and why it matters for education

In this session, Carolina will take the audience on a brief journey that explores how our memory works and how we can use this knowledge to tweak teaching practice. She will share research insights on human learning that can directly inform activities in the classroom and provide hands-on practical tips. There will be demonstrations to experience the learning strategies, and the audience will leave the session inspired and ready to apply new ideas.
